This is what I have heard. At one time the World Honored One was staying near Varanasi at Isipatana in the Deer Park. At that time the WorldHonored One addressed the group of five monks, saying, "Bhikkhus, there are two extremes that a monk should avoid. What are the two?

Đây là điều tôi đã nghe. Một thời Đức Thế Tôn trụ tại Isipatana trong khu vườn Nai gần thành Varanasi. Lúc đó Đức Thế Tôn gặp nhóm năm vị tu sĩ, nói, “ Các vị tỳ kheo, có hai thái cực mà một vị tu sĩ cần tránh. Hai thái cực đó là gì ?

"The first is the devotion to sensual desire and the pleasure resulting from sensual desire. Such devotion is base, pedestrian, worldly, ignoble, and unbeneficial. The second is devotion to harsh austerity. Such devotion is painful, ignoble, and unbeneficial. By not following either of these extremes, the Tathagata has realized the Middle Way that gives rise to seeing and understanding. This seeing and understanding are at the bases of peace, knowledge, full awakening, and nirvana.

"Đầu tiên là theo đuổi dục lạc và hưởng thụ dục lạc. Theo đuổi dục lạc là đê hèn, thô bỉ, phàm tục, thấp kém và không lợi lạc. Hai là theo đuổi lối tu khổ hạnh ép xác. Theo đuổi lối tu khổ hạnh là đau đớn, thấp kém và không lợi lạc. Bằng cách không đi theo hai thái cực ấy, Như Lai đã nhận ra con đường trung đạo phát khởi từ thực chứng ( thấy và hiểu biết ). Thực chứng này là nền tảng của an lạc, hiểu biết giác ngộ và niết bàn.
